New Libretto Model???

Postby stuartguthrie on Sat Sep 20, 2008 5:01 pm

Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if (or when) Toshiba will release another Libretto?

Thanks in advance,
Stu :)

Already sent an email to Toshiba with that question, but no response.

On the blog, you can read this http://www.librettoworld.com/libretto-t ... 105-it-is/

Bummer! Was the Libretto ever a popular selling notebook? I have read that not many units were sold and that it wasn't very successful. Is that true?

Well, I do not know the exact figures but I can imagine that the LIbretto U100 wasn't one of the best selling latptops of Toshiba. For the prize you paid for the little rascal (Bob Ross!), in Europe around € 2000, there were some other, cheaper solutions. But in iis niche, it was one of the better options I think.

I spoke to the New Zealand Toshiba distributor at a trade show a couple months back and asked them about the Libretto.

Basically they said that everyone who brought one, loved them. However, whilst they sold well to photographers, business travellers and geeks, they were just too small and expensive to attract a big enough market share to make it a worthwhile product.

They suspect if there is another model released, it might be available in Japan only, where they sold a lot better.

Still, even then, there are companies that will import Japanese laptops, and re-fit them with US-style keyboards (and software if desired) and re-sell them to fans. No matter what, I'd still have to get my hands on one ;-)

Thanks for sharing that info. I can't understand why with all these new sub-notebooks entering the market such as the eeePC, Fujitsu u1010, Flybook, etc. why Toshiba wouldn't try to re-enter the market especially they were the ones who started the whole trend with the LIbretto. I see so many sub-notebooks up at uni these days where as I never saw them two or three years back.

Yeah, if ever Toshiba did release another Libretto and it was only available for import then I'd definitely be up for one.
