EEEbuntu on a Libretto?

Postby DataPhreak » Thu Jan 01, 2009 7:18 am

Ran across this couple of days ago and dusted off my old Libretto. You can check it out at eeebuntu.org. The kernel in this is custom built for the Eeepc's and all of the hardware is supposed to work automatically from install. Does that mean that it won't work on a libretto? I'd like to get it installed on mine if possible, and I'm just working out the feasability of it right now. The interface is designed with the specific aspect ratio of the libretto screen in mind.

Any thoughts, let me know.

I haven't used eeebuntu myself, but from reading their website it seems that their kernel will not work on devices with different hardware with the exception of perhaps different wifi cards.

But you could always give it a try and see what happens. :-)

But one could take a leaf out of their book and create "Libuntu"…

It wouldn't actually be too hard.

Effectively, you'd need to take Ubuntu and:
1. Build a custom kernel tuned to the libretto
2. Build a few packages of support scripts and libretto-specific drivers
3. Create an install CD with all the packages.

If you're a bit more lazy (eg: me) you could just stick all the custom packages in a repository and then add it to APT, allowing any ubuntu system to be converted into a "libuntu" system. I've been tempted to make a Fedora repository of all the custom scripts and drivers that I'm running on my Libretto at some stage - might try and get around to this for when I upgrade from Fedora 9 to Fedora 10.

Hi!

I guess it wouldn't be a horrible job to tailor make a distro for the Libretto. I run Mandriva on my U105 (Bought off eBay a few weeks ago with a broken LCD, now fine thanks to a Chinese modding group that will sell these Sharp panels)

Once I have my custom kernel finished I can make a live distro from mine. Is there anybody out there intersted? I have almost all the hardware working except the fingerprint scanner and the stupid modem.

I think a install CD isn't possible the best way for the old 50-110ct Hardware. The hardest thing on this is to get it on the hdd. Maybe the better idea is to build a tarball of a running version, so you can put your Libretto hdd on your desktop machine, load the tar on the Libretto disk, untar it in place and install grub to the MBR of the Libretto disk. Put it back in place and "have a lot of fun"
